Learning to Live Again

my personal journey of loss and faith

I wanted to share my personal thoughts, feelings, and insights on my journey as a new widow. I lost my husband of 28 years after a tragic accident while he was fighting a fire.

A New Understanding

I have spent many years watching TV and movies. Living with a volunteer firefighter meant watching shows that had a firefighting theme. Most of the time I got to hear all the things they were doing wrong! Since he was also a electric lineman, shows that had both situations were equally fun. Many times the characters were dealing with traumatic events caused by fires or accidents. I looked upon the scenes as an outsider. It seems that since Maddy's accident there have been more shows, and even books that I've read, that have had characters trapped in a fire, falling through a structure while fighting a fire, or had the structure fall on them. I can now feel the emotion and anguish the characters would feel in that situation. As I write this I'm watching a show where a person is in shock and not sure what to do when someone they care about is in an accident. I could see myself in the actions on the screen.

Anytime we experience a tragedy or difficult time in our life, we come through it with a new understanding that we can use to share with others who may also be going through a similar situation. Having dealt with the emotions, as well as the tedious tasks that come with a traumatic event, you can be a great resource for a person just beginning that journey. There are things that only people who have traveled that road can truly understand.

We don't know why God allows these things to happen, but we have to be open to the opportunities that may come our way because of our experiences. Seek God's guidance and ask Him to show you those who are in need of your comfort, compassion, understanding, and experience.
